If only we knew ... though in a sense, we did. I remember standing on the Mississippi river levee, looking down on Jackson Square during the trip, telling my father "this isn't good. oh, yes, this place is going to flood". One could easily see how much lower the square was than the river, and the square is one of the higher places in the city, which was separated from the waters surrounding it by nothing more than earthen dams that didn't look any sturdier than anything surrounding a standard midwestern retention pond.

This was a disaster waiting to occur. What I did not know at the time was that we weren't going to be kept waiting that long. Just a few months after we came back home, determined to someday return, Katrina hit. What you are seeing is Southern Lousiana, as it was, just before the tragedy of 2005.
